New Poll Open for 'Cannes vs Oscars: 1994'

Since I finally got myself around and wrote the article for 2007, I feel myself ready for the next round.

The poll for 1994 is at your disposal. On the red corner, we have the audience-favorite Robert Zemeckis film Forrest Gump which tells the story of a man with an IQ of 75 and his epic journey through life, meeting historical figures, influencing popular culture and experiencing first-hand historic events while being largely unaware of their significance, due to his lower than average intelligence. As you will remember, the film won 6 Academy Awards, including Tom Hanks' second 'Best Leading Actor' win. On the blue corner we have Pulp Fiction, the most critically acclaimed movie by the cult director Quentin Tarantino, who had to contend himself with an 'Original Screenplay' Oscar. The film joins the intersecting storylines of Los Angeles mobsters, fringe players, petty thieves, and a mysterious briefcase.

For now, I think I'll keep the poll open for two weeks. Please stop by to vote and don't forget that everything we are planning to write will depend on the public opinion reflected on this poll.

Forrest Gump has to be one of those films I truly dislike, I would find it hard to write anything positive about it.

So for that fact alone I've voted Pulp Fiction, it also helps that it's a good film.

I'm reserving my further comments for after the closing of the poll :)

I love Forrest Gump to pieces. I think it has a certain resonance with me since I watched it when I was very young and ever since, I've always loved that movie. As much as I would like to shun the movie for its sentimentality and ridiculousness, I don't have the heart to do it. The film is a well-written, well-acted, and well-directed film with a childlike imagination, wonder, and a surprisingly mature melancholy quality to it. As much as I try to deny the fact, Forrest Gump will always bee my true love.

As for Pulp Fiction...well, it's certainly entertaining and I love Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Harvey Keitel in the movie, it doesn't make me feel as inspired or great as Forrest Gump makes me feel. Sure, I acknowledge the undeniable coolness of Tarantino's script...it's just...when the film ends, I don't care too much about the stories or the characters I encountered anymore. Just like pulp fiction.

I'm looking forward to reading your comments, Anil!
